Alternative energy options for your car

With the need to potect the environment ever more an issue today, than ever, we are all looking for ways to do our bit. Although it might feel like a hopless task, and what you do will make no differernce to protecting the environment, if everone make a huge effort, then that in turn translates to a global effort. Since part of most peoples life involves travveling, and that travel will be burning fossil fuels, then one of the most important things you can do is to reduce your cars dependance on fossil fuels.

Some of the new cars manaufactured today include more eficient fuel methods, and alternative options to run your car on. If you don't have the money to spend on a brand new top of the rang all singing and daning new green car, don't worry you can convert your exisitng banger with a few ideas.

The only real renewable energy alternative fuels in town are bio-fuels, natural gas and electricity. You will have to contact your local supplier to find out what options they have available for your car, but from the prices i've checked out on the internet, if you convert you car, you can normally pay for it with the savings of a period of 6 months to 1 year for the average town and city driver.

Biofuels are soon to be the most widely available alternative energy source. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 has committed to a huge six times increase in bio fuel use in the USA by 2020.

Problems facing biofuels

Although the arguments to start using this bio fuel are strong, so is the criticism that the agriculturist methods to actually harvest that bio-fuel. With many people saying this just adding to the pollution problem. There is a strong opinion also from people who believe that this will threaten the worlds food population with food crops being diverted for fuel instead.
To much deforestation is also a dangerous reality, with more and more space required to grow these crops.

Currently around a fifth of the corn output grown in the USA was allocated for the production of bio-fuel. Then a study was commissioned which showed that even if all all the corn producing land was used to create the bio fuel ethanol, it would only account for 12% of the total required fuel consumption. So we can see there is still a long way to go before the fossil fuels can be completely replace by bio-fuel.

Already though there are some great ideas coming forward from scientists, and farmers alike. Ideas to use the inedible parts of food plants, and discarded materials which make up the food process can be used to contribute towards making ethanol. One of the biggest brewing companies Coors, is creating ethanol from spent yeast and waste beer from their manufacturing process. This is creating millions of gallons of ethanol.

So do your bit to contribute towards the future of alternative bio fuels, and drink more Coors beer!

To prevent the rising price in corn and other food crops, how about making fuel out of hemp. Hemp is environmentally friendly, actually aids in the growing of crops, grows very fast (three crops in one growing season).
